Prof Aliyu Abdu MBBS (Jos), MSc, PhD (Wits),MWACP, MD, FMCP(Nig), FRCP(London), FAMedS
He is Professor of Medicine and Current Head of Department of Medicine, past Deputy Provost Academics of the college of Health Sciences at Bayero University Kano. He is also Consultant Physician/Nephrologist, Head of Nephrology unit at Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, Kano.

He obtained his school certificate at Science Secondary School Dawakin Kudu in 1986 and started undergraduate study at Bayero University Kano (BUK) before moving to University of Jos to obtain his MBBS degree in 1994. He did his residency training at Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital and Jos University Teaching Hospital and his senior residency training at Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital (OAUTH) Ile Ife. He got scholarship of the International Society for Peritoneal Dialysis (ISPD) to study at Johannesburg Hospital .While in South Africa he obtained his MSc and later PhD Degrees from the University of Witwatersrand.

He qualified as a specialist physician in Nephrology after obtaining the fellowship of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria (NPMCN) in 2006 and later a Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree from the same institution. He also had a certificate in Project Management in Global Health from the University of Washington and holds a diploma in Research Ethics from the Center for Bioethics and Research, Ibadan.

He has been involved in research work, clinical services, training and community Services. His research interests include studies on Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) its epidemiology, complications, treatment and prevention in low resource setting. He has been involved in researches on other non-communicable diseases such as hypertension and diabetes as well as HIV infection and its complications especially kidney involvement.

He also did research in peritoneal dialysis and described the peritoneal membrane characteristics of indigenous African CAPD patients, solute clearance studies and nutritional status in these patients as well. He conducted some research on experiences of kidney transplant in our environment and living kidney donor evaluations and long term follow up.

He is site Principal Investigator (PI) for many international collaborative studies such as the multi-center study – H3Africa Kidney Disease Cohort study and other studies under the consortium, which are aimed at elucidating the gene- environment interactions and mechanisms of ApoL1 gene on kidney disease among others. He also teaches and supervises resident doctors, nephrology nurses, renal technicians as well postgraduate supervision in other Allied Health Sciences Disciplines at BUK. He is an examiner, Kano exams center Coordinator and Member faculty of internal Medicine Board at the NPMCN. He serve as external assessor for many universities within and outside the country.

He has been involved in mentoring students and residents and successfully supervised to conclusion more than 10 resident doctors who are now consultants practicing in different parts of the country and abroad. He Mentored awardees of International Society of Nephrology (ISN) fellowship and the Vanderbilt-Emory-Cornell-Duke (VECD) Global Health Fellowship under the Fogarty International Center.
