Professor Aminu Zakari Mohammed is a Professor of Pathology with Bayero University Kano, and Consultant Pathologist at Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, Nigeria(AKTH) since 2001. He obtained his MBBS degree in Medicine and Surgery at the University of Jos, Nigeria in 1992 and started his medical career as an intern in Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital, Kano that same year. He became a Lecturer and Consultant Pathologist in Bayero University and Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, Nigeria respectively in 2001, after completion of his Residency training in Pathology at the Jos University Teaching Hospital and obtaining a Fellowship of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria (NPMCN). He was also awarded the prestigious Smithkline-Beecham and James Heggie prices for the best candidate in Anatomic Pathology and the part II FMCpath examinations respectively by the National postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria. He also has an MD degree from the NPMCN. Between 2002 through 2007, he served as the Head of Department of various departments in Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital and Bayero University, Kano (Hematology, Pathology, and Chemical Pathology).

He has been actively involved with the training of undergraduate medical and Allied Health science students in General, Systemic and Forensic Pathology and resident doctors in Pathology since 2001. He has also served as external examiner to several universities since 2005, and as an examiner in the Faculty of Pathology, National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria since 2007. He has continued to mentor and supervise several Msc students in human anatomy, human reproduction and Msc /PhD students in Medical Laboratory Science. Prof Aminu has served as a member of the Medical and Dental Council accreditation of medical programmes and as Chief Examiner for the MDCN examination of foreign medical graduates. He has also participated in NUC accreditation teams to several universities as well as NPMCN accreditation teams to several tertiary and specialist hospitals for residency training in Pathology.

His research interests can be broadly summarized as exploring the epidemiology and pathologic presentations of tumours with focus on Genitourinary tumours in Africans, and examining the utility of low-cost diagnostic techniques in resource- limited settings (over 100 peer-reviewed publications, 2 book chapters). He has collaborated with colleagues in the USA in establishing NIH-funded research projects at AKTH, and currently serving as Training Advisory Committee member on a D43 study aimed at building clinical trial research capacity in HIV-associated Non Communicable Diseases in Nigeria. He has served as invitation lecturer and resource person at several National and International meetings and conferences.

Prof Aminu has broad administrative experience in the Nigerian public health sector having served as Chairman Medical Advisory committee for 4 years and subsequently as Chief Medical Director for two terms (8 years) at the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, Kano. In addition to consolidating and expanding the teaching hospital to a 700 bedded facility for clinical service delivery, training and research, during the period, all residency training programmes and schools under the hospital became fully accredited or re-accredited. Several international research grants were also secured and effectively managed during the period.

During a one year Sabbatical leave in the Department of Pathology, Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University / Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital, Bauchi he served as Acting Provost of the College of Medical Sciences, Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Bauchi. He has received over 50 merit awards from various academic, professional, non-governmental and private organizations in Nigeria and Internationally.
